Businesses welcoming "greener" downtown

CAIRO, GA (WALB) -

The first phase of a streetscape program for downtown Cairo could be completed as early as the first part of next year.

Leaders have been talking about the project since 2008. They decided not to start work until after Christmas because the construction process won't be pretty.  The transformation will give south Broad Street in the central business district a new look.

"We've been here for about 3 years, actually we've been in the building next door for a few years before that, we're really looking forward to this, business has been great, its going to be helpful for all of the businesses down here, we need a nice fresh look," said The Cairo City Grill Owner Debbie Rocuant.

The new look will include trees and a landscaped median. The city was awarded a $700 thousand grant for the first phase.
