SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Overnight duplex fire sends two to the hospital in Savannah.

Savannah Fire responded to the fire on the 1100 block of East 54th street. The fire was contained to one side of the duplex. The building sustained water damage.

According to neighbor David Harris, two occupants were in the side of the duplex that was on fire. Harris heard someone saying, "Dave, Dave, Dave" and he went over to check it out. According to Harris, there was a 79-year-old man inside. Harris went inside the house four times trying to find the man, but was having trouble with all the smoke. The female who lived in the duplex went inside and was able to locate the elderly man. She started yelling, Harris was able to find the both of them and drag them outside.

Harris had just moved across the street and was awake cleaning. Harris said, "It must have been God's will, that is all I can say."

Two individuals were transported to a local hospital.

The cause of the fire and the extent of the injuries are unknown at this time.

WTOC will update this story as more details come in.
