Why are parents camping out in Lee County?

LEESBURG, GA (WALB) -

Dozens of parents camped out Friday night in Leesburg to make sure their kids get into the pre-k program.

The system only has 240 slots for next school year. Registration opens Saturday.

Marcia Poulos said she doesn't mind camping out to guarantee a spot for her child. In fact, she did it once before for another one of her children. "There's no official list, so first come first served for Lee County pre-k. And of course it's a great program, and it's free, so everyone wants to make sure they ensure a good spot in line," Poulos said.

Last year, pre-k classes didn't fill up until mid-April, but the previous three years all the spots were taken on the first day of registration.

Parents need to register their children at the Lee County School System headquarters.

If slots don't fill up on Saturday, registration will continue from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
