THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

Thomasville civil rights legend Ira Flowers has died after a lengthy illness.

Flowers dedicated his life to improving the lives of others. He was involved in numerous community organizations and ran what was once known as the blacks-only YMCA in Thomasville for years.

He spent a lot of time helping at-risk kids with college admissions. Community leaders say he leaves an important legacy.

"Mr. Flowers is a leader in the community at large, the black community more specifically," said Walter Leslie with the Jack Hadley Museum. "He worked for the YMCA for over 15 years. He was heavily involved in his fraternity and also just a leader in this community."

Flowers was 61.
