VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

In conjunction with Georgia's Arbor Day, the Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber celebrated the 100th tree planted in honor of the first 100 Chairmen of the Board of Directors, 1912 to 2012. In 2012, the Chamber committed to plant 100 trees as a celebration of its centennial anniversary.

Each tree planted was purchased by a business from the local community or local citizens seeking to honor loved ones. The top sponsors included Georgia Power with 20 trees and the Rotary Club of Valdosta with eight trees.

The Centennial Tree Planting Committee, led by Carla Penny, elected to plant Georgia's state tree, the Live Oak. The first 65 were planted on St. Augustine Rd. between West Hill Ave. and Industrial Blvd. The remaining 35 trees line the Gornto Road Extension.

Penny spoke at the event, highlighting the success of the program and praising the efforts of the community to come together for a great cause.

For more information about the Centennial Tree Project, please contact the Chamber at (229)247-8100 or visit www.ValdostaChamber.com .
