ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

It's a new program  from Superintendent Dr. David Mosely to honor hardworking teachers.    Thursday, the elementary, middle and high school winners were surprised in their classrooms.

Chassidy Vaughn, a 5th grade teacher at Westtown Elementary was the first winner to receive a game ball.

Vaughn, who has been teaching for five years, said: "I am shocked and couldn't be happier and more pleased."

She says the best part of her job is watching her students succeed. "Being able to see them achieve, to see them reach their goals means everything to me."

"I've got something special for your teacher, because you have been special learners,"  Mosely said.

Jasmine Dixon, a 7th grade social studies teacher at Albany Middle School also won.   Dixon has been teaching for five years and uses data to drive her instruction in the classroom. "It feels excellent and singled out in a system with over 1,500 teachers. And it makes me feel excellent that my hard work has not gone unnoticed," she said.

Tammy Holton, an English teacher at Westover High is the first high school teacher to receive the award. "Wow!  That's the only thing I can say!"

She's been teaching for 20 and says this is her calling. "This is the only thing I could ever do. This is my passion and I will do it until I can't do it any longer."

Those behind this initiative hope recognizing teachers like these will encourage them and inspire others.

Every three months, school leaders will pick an elementary, middle, and high school "Game ball" winner.

Nominations are received from Principals, Assistant Principals, and certified teacher evaluators.
