John Wells announces campaign for reelection to MCSB, District 2

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

John Wells announced in a press conference this morning, Feb. 27, that he is running for reelection to District 2 for the Muscogee County School Board (MCSB).

Wells is currently the senior member of the MCSB, and says he has served in all of the positions on the Board. He has been president, and has now been Chairman of the Finance Committee for the past 17 years.

"I see every year, for the past several years, in this really austere economy that we've got, cuts from the state to the local school system," says Wells. "Over the past 10 years, there have been no less than $140 million that has been cut from the budget."

He says MCSB is still projecting $10 to $14 million this year, making the 2015 budget about the same as it was 12 years ago, in 2002.

In spite of this strain in financial resources, Wells says the school board plans to continue to give the teachers the $2,500 supplement to their annual state pay. He also says the Board is budgeting so that teachers do not have to take furlough days this year.

Wells addressed the process of hiring the new Superintendent, David Lewis, citing public and media concerns that the process took too long and used too many resources. "We were not looking for a superintendent," says Wells. "We were looking for the Superintendent."

Wells says he really likes Lewis, and will support him in his efforts.

When asked about Frank Myers' announcement to run for the District 8 seat, Wells responded, "He is not my opponent. My father told me a long time ago, ‘Don't get in anybody else's race, and you'll be better off in yours.'"

Pastor Paul Voorhees opened the press conference in prayer, and former Columbus mayor Bob Poydasheff gave the introduction.
