CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

A 43-year-old man has been sentenced to 40 years behind bars in connection with the savage beating death a man who once dated the suspect's mother.

Robert Wright was found guilty of murder by a Charleston County jury Tuesday evening following a two day trial. Wright, who faced a sentence of 30 years to life in prison, was given a 40 year sentence.

Prosecutors say Christopher Jenkins, 46, died as a result of a "violent, malicious attack" at the hands of Wright that took place on June 10, 2010.

A release states Jenkins was walking with his two young nephews and one of their friends when Wright approached him from behind, slammed him to the pavement, and punched Jenkins several times. Wright then stomped on the motionless victim and threatened one of the young boys when they asked him to stop the beating.

According to Assistant Solicitor Chad Simpson, Wright's mother was in a romantic relationship with Jenkins, but the two split up. After the break up, Wright "felt that Jenkins' unwanted contact with his mother and continued difficulties between them were an affront to his family."

After Wright drove away from the scene, officials say the victim eventually walked back home and spent the next two days in bed as his condition worsened. His mother called for an EMS, but Jenkins died shortly after their arrival.

Forensic Pathologist Dr. Nicholas Batalis said Jenkins suffered a straight line break of 10 ribs, which caused internal bleeding resulting in severe blood loss. The breaks were consistent with a stomp from a foot with great force.

Wright has previously been convicted for domestic violence, and faces two pending domestic violence charges, according to the release.
