RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

The Richland County Sheriff's Department has captured a suspect who led deputies on a chase and then escaped custody early this morning.

According to Sgt. Curtis Wilson, Shawn Bethea was arrested for a second time around 5 a.m. Wednesday after a series of events.

Sgt. Wilson says it all started just after 3 a.m. when Bethea was speeding and almost ran a deputy off Broad River Road. The deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but Bethea refused to pull over and a chase ensued.

Deputies say they were able to catch up with Bethea at the Woodland Village Apartments on Bush River Road and arrest him.

Bethea was in-transit to a nearby substation when, according to Wilson, he managed to escape from custody. Sgt. Wilson says Bethea was apprehended a short time later about 150 yards from where he escaped.

Bethea was initially wanted for wanted for reckless driving, giving false information to law enforcement officers, and failure to stop for blue lights and sirens.

No word yet on if any additional charges are pending.
