South Georgia veterans honored students for showing their patriotism.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars in Albany hosted a banquet Tuesday night for area winners in their Voice of Democracy speech contest and Patriots Pen essay contest. Those winners could move on to state and national competitions.
VFW Senior Vice Commander Paul Murray said, "It helps developing their writing skills, and also it's a good chance to win a scholarship of up to $50,000 depending on which particular program you're involved in."
The VFW presented plaques to six winners and also honored three area teachers for their excellence in the classroom.
