Family farms are diminishing in Georgia

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Family farms are diminishing in Georgia, but the ag industry's impact continues to grow in the state.

Data from the U-S Department of Agriculture's census of agriculture, conducted every five years, shows the number of farms in Georgia decreased by 12% in five years.

The study points out that commercial farms remain big and highly productive.

One family farmer remains optimistic about his future.

"I noticed a lot of young people went off in other cities, after they've gotten out of high school they coming back," said John Green, farmer.

The study shows Georgia farms contribute about 70 billion dollars a year to the state economy.

While the average age of farmers in the state increased from 58 to 60, the number of African American and Hispanic farmers increased.
