Mitchell County fuel truck crash under investigation

Posted: Updated:
MITCHELL CO., GA (WALB) -

Mitchell County leaders say a county truck that crashed Thursday afternoon seriously injuring the driver, was in good shape.

County worker Lonnie Holmes remains in critical condition Friday in a Macon hospital.

The fuel truck he was driving crashed into a ditch on Martin Luther King Junior after a tire blew out.

Holmes was trapped in the truck for almost 45 minutes.

The County administrator says the county bought what was initially a spreader truck from the Department of Transportation several years ago. He says it was road worthy.

"The truck was put into operation a few weeks ago. It had new tires on it. We just converted it into a fuel truck. This is certainly a concern to the board of commissioners and a concern to his coworkers," said Clark Harrell.

The County asked the State Patrol's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team to look into the mechanics of the vehicle and investigate.
