New Georgia confederate specialty tag sparks debate

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A new Georgia specialty tag displaying the Confederate battle flag has people talking. The Georgia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans requested a new state-issued license plate.

The old one had a small Confederate battle flag. The new one features an additional, larger image in the background that covers the entire plate. The Department of Revenue's Motor Vehicle Division recently approved the request.

Critics say it's racially insensitive, but supporters say it simply honors their confederate heritage. Some people say they can see both sides of the debate.

"I feel like they should be able to do it because everybody has right to their opinion. I don't see what a flag has to do with it on your tag. Why you shouldn't be able to do it. Some people may not feel like that, but I'm not one of them," said Eric Herring.

"People that are for it, I can see their point as being their trying to preserve their heritage and that they feel like they should have something from  your past they can be proud  to talk about. But the people that's against it, they have a right to be against it since it was to continue slavery," said Rashaad Cherry.

The plates cost $80, $10 of which goes to the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

The money will be used to promote Southern heritage through educational activities and preservation efforts around the state.

The Confederate Battle flag was part of Georgia's state flag from 1956 to 2001.
