Identity released of Pine Hill police officer shot while on duty

WILCOX CO., AL (WSFA) -

A Pine Hill police officer is recovering from injuries he sustained after being shot while on duty.

The Pine Hill police chief has identified the injured officer as 44-year-old patrolman Gene Starr. The shooting happened when Starr responded to a call in the Wilcox County town.

Pine Hill Mayor Roberta Jordan said Starr pulled into the yard of a residence and was shot by a suspect who was standing at a window on the house's second floor. Jordan said the bullet went through the officer's patrol car's windshield.

Starr suffered one gunshot to the shoulder. He was taken by medical helicopter to a Montgomery hospital for treatment. He will have surgery Wednesday and is currently in stable condition. He's expected to make a full recovery, according to the police chief.

Starr has been with the Pine Hill Police Department since October but is a veteran officer.

The suspect, unidentified at this time, was arrested and taken to the Wilcox County Jail in Camden.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is the lead investigator on the case at the request of the Pine Hill police chief.
