VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

The city of Valdosta may provide some hope for Small businesses in South Georgia.

Two small businesses recently won the A.L. Girardin award for their service to the Valdosta Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce. One of the winners, who owns a creative marketing company, says it's proof that small business can succeed in Valdosta, even though it's not as easy as it used to be.

"You can't just say 'I'm gonna start a business,' put your sign out there, and your friends and family come and it grows from there. It really takes some strategic planning," explained Steven Heddon, Owner of Fusion Creative Marketing in Valdosta.

"You have organizations like the chamber that will help you get through that process, the city and county government, some of the other players, are trying to make it as easy as possible," Heddon continued.

Scott James, with the radio stations Talk 92.1 and The Jock 1150 AM was the other recipient of the award.

Heddon started his company more than 10 years ago and runs it out of his home.
