THOMAS COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

It's a dance that special needs students from nine counties look forward to each year.

The sweetheart dance is just as big a deal for them as the senior prom is for many students. The 7th annual dance was held in Thomas County Central high School's gym from 9am until noon on Friday.

This year's theme was Mardi Gras, "I think even after I retire, I'll still come and plan it, it's so much fun, it's a lot of work but the smiles on these kid's faces is worth it all," said event coordinator Alma Simmons.

Music was provided by "DJ's on the go" and many student groups at the high school volunteered at the event.
