BAINBRIDGE, GA (WALB) -

Bainbridge State College Associate Professor Tatyana Pashnyak's presentation on using social media apps to meet students' needs in academic advising has won a "Best in the State" award.

Pashnyak, an associate professor of business and medical administrative technology, will be recognized at a National Academic Advising Association Region 4 Conference awards luncheon in Savannah, Ga., scheduled for April 1-3.

Her presentation, entitled "Using Social Media Apps to Meet Students Where They Are," says several recent studies suggest using social media in higher education is an emerging trend and appears to be very successful.

Pashnyak says results from a follow-up survey indicate an increase level of student satisfaction with academic advising (from 73 percent to 91 percent), thus suggesting that the use of social media for academic advising should be expanded.

"More and more data suggest social media can play a very important role in helping today's higher education students have a more successful and enjoyable experience, including for those who are distance-learning students," Pashnyak said.

Kathleen Ketterer, dean of Bainbridge State's School of Health Sciences and Professional Studies, said Pashnyak's award is indicative of the professor's ability and attitude of maximizing her students' successes at Bainbridge State.

The National Academic Advising Association is comprised of faculty and staff representatives from colleges in all 50 states as well as in Puerto Rico and Canada. Its mission is to promote student success by advancing the field of academic advising globally.
