Albany Marathon looking for volunteers

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Marathon runners will lace up their shoes and run through the streets of Albany on March 1st.  Many of them will be trying to qualify to run the Boston Marathon, but they need your help.

"We have road marshals that are available that is on Saturday, you can take different shifts so if you have something to do that morning, we welcome you to the opportunity to come down that afternoon," said Rashelle Beasley, Albany Convention & Visitors Bureau.

If you aren't interested in being a road marshal, there are other ways you can volunteer your time.

"You can volunteer at the finish line, putting on medals on the runners, giving them blankets, if you are a caring person and you love helping people, that is a great opportunity for you," said Beasley.

But what if you don't want to leave your neighborhood? Don't worry, the runners may run right past your front door, and you can still help out.

"We need people in the Rawson Circle area, out in the doublegate area, downtown of course," said Beasley.

The Hilton Garden Inn is the host hotel, and employees are ready for the rush.

"Not only is it sold out, you're looking at two people to a room, sometimes three, and we offer an Italian feast before the marathon that has already filled up," said BJ Fletcher, Director of Sales, Hilton Garden Inn.

Organizers really want South Georgians to volunteer their time, they are giving everyone a reward at the end of the day.

"Being a volunteer you get a T-shirt, you get a ticket to the Mardi Gras street festival later day," said Beasley.

The Mardi Gras Festival runs from noon to midnight that Saturday and includes games, vendors, and live music.

If you would like to volunteer call (229) 317-4760.
