FITZGERALD, GA (WALB) -

Working as a store clerk can be a very dangerous job. They never know who will walk into their store, or who will pull out a gun.

Now some are taking measures to protect themselves.

Just two months ago, 19-year-old Krishna Patel was shot by an attempted robber.  Now he's back at work at his family's convenience store in Fitzgerald.

"I kept thinking I was going to die..." said Patel.

Investigators say this video shows 28-year-old Shawn Pennington walking into the 107 Express Store, and shooting Patel.

"Honestly I can't remember what was going through my head when I saw the gun. It just happened too quick. My first instinct was to duck and try to hide," Patel said.

But Pennington shot Patel twice, ran outside to clear his gun, then ran in and fired more shots.  "The first one grazed the back of my head.  I'm not sure.  And then the other went through, there was a TV right here."

Pennington took off, and Patel called for help. "I would have never thought that anything like that would have happened to me.  Yeah, it was shocking."

Dennis Barot, owner of Your Supermarket in Cordele has also stared down the barrel of a gun.

"Of course, it's scary to anyone, right?" Barot said.

So if someone pulls a gun on you, what's going to happen?  Surveillance video from December shows five men rushing into Barot's store... But they were met with a clerk who was also armed.

"As soon as they come inside, they start shooting, and they injured one of the person," Barot said.  "And then they demand the money.  However, my other clerk, for his protection, he, from behind the counter, he pulled out the machete for self protection.  As soon as he pulled it, the robber ran away."

Five teenagers and a 20-year-old believed to have been the robbers in this, and other robberies, were soon caught.

And Barot has taken more steps to make sure his clerks are protected. "That's why my clerks are ready and armed.  Ready with the guns, so they don't have to worry."

And Patel says he too is working to get a gun so he can protect himself.  "I always knew it could be dangerous, but when it actually happened, yeah, it made me realize that it is pretty dangerous."

He says he won't be defenseless...  if he's caught looking down the barrel of a gun.
