One brother dies, the other injured in fiery crash

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Police have confirmed at least one man is dead and another injured after a truck struck a pole in east Albany and then caught fire.

APD officials say around 1:35 Wednesday morning two brothers were driving west, speeding in their GMC 1500 on the 2400 block of Rosebrier Avenue.

APD said the driver struck a light pole, hit multiple objects before coming to stop, and that's when the truck caught on fire.

One brother, 39-year-old Petrocelli Williams was taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and his brother, 36-year-old Costanza Williams, died at the scene.

Eric Smith will likely never forget what he saw Wednesday morning.  "I heard a loud a loud boom. I saw the tree and the truck were up in flames."

Around 1:30 a GMC pickup truck driver lost control on Rosebrier Avenue, slammed into a pole and burst into flames.   The driver 36-year-old Costanza Williams engulfed by flames, was on the ground when Smith got to him.

"I just ran and got what I could to put him out. I wasn't worried about the truck," said Smith. He threw buckets of water on Williams in an attempt to save him.

"His brother was laying over here in the grass asking if we could help his brother, but there was nothing we could do. We just had to call the fire department."

"I never saw anything like that in my life. It's hard. It's going to stick with me for a long time. I just feel for his family. It's just bad,' said Smith.

Albany Police say speed was likely a factor in the crash.

Petrocelli Williams was in good, stable condition and his injuries are not life threatening.

They expect to release him later  today.
