THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

Southwest Georgia Technical College has been nominated for a community college excellence award.

Only one other community college in the state was nominated.  A 3 step process determines whether the college will receive the Aspen prize of $1 million but the President of the college says he's just honored to be in the running.

"Even if we don't get past this next round it really is a big honor just to get to that point, it does validate the hard work faculty, staff and students have done to be successful in the classroom and subsequently it shows in careers," said SWGTC president Dr. Craig Wentworth.

This is the school's first time being nominated. The award takes into account student success, consistent improvement in different areas over time, the college's mission, size and minority representation.
