THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

Knowing how to handle a gun is also a vital part of being a responsible owner, and a south Georgia area technical college is working to make sure people buying guns know how to use them safely.

The course, offered at Southwest Georgia Technical College, covers the basic NRA pistol course which incorporates firearm safety, general knowledge, how firearms work, how ammunition works, and different types of ammunition.

The introductory course consists of classroom and gun range training. Owners can expand their knowledge for $70.

The course will teach attendees how to properly hold a gun in hopes that a confident gun holder is a safe gun holder.

The instructor says more women are signing up for the classes.

"In our first class more than half the class was women, in the upcoming class we're running about 50/50 right now," said NRA certified instructor James Beveridge.

Lauren fielding a new employee at Kevin's Fine Outdoor Gear and Apparel says it's definitely something that piques her interest.

You know it's a skill, it's something that protects us, it's a right that we have in the states, to defend ourselves but it's also an important piece of knowledge.

The course will focus on making sure that beginning handlers get the basics of shooting, range rules, shooting positions, and state laws. It's a course that Fielding is now considering.

"I would be interested in taking a class, in fact I didn't know that there was going to be class but I am very interested now," said Fielding.

Organizers are hoping that others will follow her lead by taking the time to enroll in a course, before using a gun without proper training.

The course dates and times are Tuesday, Feb. 18, 6 P.M.-8:30 p.m. (Building A, Room 132), Thursday, Feb. 20th, 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m. (Building A, Room 132), and Saturday, Feb. 22, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (outdoor shooting range).
