CAMILLA, GA (WALB) -

EMC and Georgia Power crews from South Georgia are in the Atlanta area now, ready to assist with potential outages from the winter storm.

An historic winter storm is bearing down on north Georgia. Freezing rain and ice could lead to countless numbers of power outages.

Crews from Mitchell EMC are ready to help. "We're just there to give them mutual aid if the worst does come to fruition," said Sunny Cochran of Mitchell EMC. Seven linemen loaded three bucket trucks bound for the metro area.

Before sunup, Georgia Power crews left out of Albany headed to north Georgia where their work will depend on just how bad the weather gets.

"There will be wires down in the worst case. There will poles down. Just depending on the magnitude of it will depend on how long they'll be there," said Jay Smith, Georgia Power Area Manager.

These linemen are prepared to be go as long as 10 days. "If we have to swap out a crew we will. But we're prepared for the long haul," said Cochran.

Now it's a waiting game to see just how bad it gets.
