VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Freddie Broome, current Assistant Fire Chief for the city of Winston Salem, North Carolina, will be the next Valdosta Fire Chief.

Officials from Valdosta and Lowndes County welcomed Broome to the city and officially introduced him as the new fire chief at a ceremony in Valdosta Tuesday morning.

Broome brings nearly 20 years of experience with him. He joined the Winston Salem Fire Department as a firefighter in 1996. He was promoted to Assistant Chief in 2009.

Broome earned a Bachelor of Engineering Technology with a concentration in Fire Safety from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He earned a Masters in Public Administration degree from Appalachian State University.

He said his first order of business will be to establish a relationship with the community.

"My first goal is to establish those relationships with the departments, with the management staff team, with the communities," Broome explained.

"I'm impressed with the city, the demographics of the city, the direction that [outgoing chief] Rice has already put the department in when I started researchin' the department," Broome continued.

Broome's first day will be March 10th.
