Teacher, firefighter face judge on statutory rape charges

(WMC-TV) – A Shelby County Schools teacher and a Memphis firefighter both faced a judge on rape charges Monday.

Bolton High School assistant baseball coach and teacher Michael Lewis is accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student both in his classroom and at his house. His roommate, MFD firefighter Bryan Wilson, is also accused of having sex with a different 17-year-old Bolton High School student.

Students at the high school told Action News 5 they were not surprised about the charges as rumors had been flying.

So, what did school officials know? And when? Action News 5's freedom of information request with the school district has been forwarded to its attorneys. Meanwhile, Lewis and Wilson went to court.

Lewis, who is charged with aggravated statutory rape and statutory rape by an authority figure, is free on a $30,000 bond.

Wilson maintains his innocence and is also free on bond.

Both men have been relieved of duty pending investigations into the charges.

"At this point, Mr. Wilson absolutely maintains his innocence," said his attorney, Blake Ballin. "He denies any wrongdoing. He looks forward to defending himself in court. He's a hard working, public servant. And he hopes that his name will be cleared in the very near future."

Wilson will go back to court on February 25. Lewis will go back one day later, on February 26.
