SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) -

Salisbury Police say they have now arrested the teen responsible for shooting a student on the campus of Salisbury High School after classes dismissed on Monday.

DaJuan Russell, 17, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon, having a weapon on school grounds, and discharging a gun on school property.

Russell was found at the home of a family member just before 11:00 pm Monday night.  He is being held under $250,000 bond.

Sixteen-year-old Shaleek Williams, a freshman football and basketball player, was shot on the campus of Salisbury High School Monday afternoon.

Williams talked to WBTV at his home just hours after the shooting happened.

He said a group of young men that don't go to Salisbury High came by the school and started causing trouble.

He was trying to break up a fight between two people when he was shot.

"I was trying to break it up and I ended up getting shot and hurt," the 16-year-old said.

Investigators said the group from "out of town" went into the school's gymnasium and got into an argument with students inside around 3 p.m., after school had let out for the day.

That argument spilled into the streets, according to investigators, Williams was punched in the face and shot in the stomach.

Monday night, police told WBTV they were seeking help from the public in locating 17-year-old Dajuan Lamont Russell.

Russell is wanted for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, possession of a firearm on school property and discharging a weapon on school property.

Williams told WBTV that he and Russell used to be friends.

After the shooting, two people were reportedly seen running from the scene.  A source says a gun was dropped in the area.

WBTV has learned that Williams ran from the area shouting "Someone help me, I've been shot."

That's when a woman reportedly saw him, opened her vehicle door and yelled at him to get into the car.

She took him to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center, which is several blocks from the school. Williams, who was shot in the abdomen, was resting at his home a few hours later.

"I want to really thank God and my mom because she really do want to keep me as a positive child and keep me away from the wrong people," Williams told WBTV.

Many students reportedly showed up at the hospital, and officials had to make them to leave.

About the support his fellow students showed, Williams said "I want to thank everybody for being here for me and showing me all the respect they have for me."

Both Salisbury High School and Livingstone College were placed into a lockdown mode during the initial investigation process,  but the lockdowns have since been lifted.

According to the school's website, a girl's JV basketball game was scheduled for Monday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. That has since been canceled.

A crisis intervention team is slated to be at Salisbury High School on Tuesday for students.  The school system will send a message to parents about the incident.
