ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Commissioner Gloria Gaines announced her bid for Dougherty County Chair this morning in front of the Government Center at 222 Pine Avenue.

Current chairman Jeff 'Bodine' Sinyard announced recently that he would not seek another term on the commission.

Gaines has served on the commission for six years and just wrapped up a year as vice chair.

She says she wants to build on the county's financial progress and focus on bringing jobs to the area.  "I think that the county is in good stead.  However there are some things that we certainly can look at.  And you always must keep your eye on economic development."

One of the ways to bring growth, se said, is to focus on Southwest Georgia's strongest asset.  "We are an agricultural center," she said.  "I think we can do a lot to improve our agribusiness.  One of the things we do is produce raw products here.  I think we can do a lot more to process those products."

Gaines also wants to invest in the county's higher learning institutions.   The primary will be held May 20th.   Attorney Chris Cohilas already announced his candidacy for the spot.
