State school superintendent candidate visits DCSS

DOUGHERTY CO., GA (WALB) -

A candidate for State School Superintendent listened to the concerns of Dougherty County School leaders Friday.

Allen Fort, who's from Americus, is one of many candidates vying for the seat.  He began his teaching career in Lee County and is currently the Superintendent in Quitman County.

Fort says, if he's elected, he'll work with other elected officials and agencies to help find jobs for high school graduates.

"I think that's one of the most important things is working together, not just to get them graduated from high school. But what are we doing after high school.  What kind of skill are we teaching these students to be prepared for life when they walk across the stage?" said Fort.

Fort talked with several school leaders about what they think are the biggest issues facing students in Southwest Georgia.

Currents state superintendent John Barge is running for Governor.
