VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Some Valdosta sewers are smoking.

The city is smoke testing the sewer system. They worked in the Cherry Creek neighborhood today to help home owners identify cracks in their plumbing.

It also saves the city money.

"We've been trying to reduce the amount of inflow and infiltration into our sewer system," explained Henry Hicks, Valdosta Director of Utilities. "Now, that's typically caused by storm water...When you get that storm water, it causes us to use more electricity to pump. Because now, we're pumpin' not just sewage, we're pumpin' storm water."

This is part of the city's plan to test 300 miles of sewer pipes over the next four years.
