Dozens kick off the Big Read

Dozens of people gathered at the Albany Civic Center Monday night to kick off the Big Read. It's a partnership between the National Endowment for the Arts and Albany State University to encourage folks to read and to improve literacy.

All participants will read Zora Neale Hurston's "Their Eyes Were watching God" this month.

"This is important because there has been a diminished reading in society, and in response that national designed a project to revitalize the reading in American culture," said James Hill, Chairman.

The program is free and open to the public and includes activities all month, including a lecture about the author Tuesday night.
