Woman dies from injuries in Cookeville church shooting

COOKEVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Etta Medley, 61, died shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday from her injuries in a church shooting that happened last Sunday, Putnam County Sheriff David Andrews confirms.

Just after 9 a.m. last Sunday, Putnam County officials received reports of an active shooter at Double Springs Community Church on Double Springs Road.

"My first thought," said Putnam County Sheriff David Andrews, "was, 'Dear God, how many people are in the building, and what has happened?' Fortunately for everyone else, they weren't at church yet."

When the Putnam County Sheriff's Department SWAT Team responded, they found a woman with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. They also found a male subject, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The three people were found in the basement of the church.

"You hear something like that and think, 'No way. That's not going on out here,''' said Jed Bowman, who lives next door to the church with his wife and children.

Andrews said they believe the male subject, identified as 65-year-old Tommy Meadows, is responsible for the shooting.

Investigators believe Tommy Meadows went to the church, where his estranged wife, Wanda Meadows, and her sister, 61-year-old Etta Medley, were preparing communion, when they were attacked.

Medley was shot in the abdomen before Tommy Meadows went to the basement and took his own life.

Medley underwent surgery at Vanderbilt Medical Center, where police believe she died.

Wanda Meadows suffered minor injuries during the altercation with her husband, Andrews said.

The Double Springs Community Church has 35 members, and they're now pulling together to support the two sisters.

The Rev. Frank Rodgers canceled services for the week as the members come to grips with what happened.

"Folks are hurting, but we are coping. They're a strong bunch of folks who love the Lord and know He'll help us through this situation, and we're going to come out on top," Rodgers said.

Wanda Meadows had filed for divorce from her husband prior to the shooting, but she didn't have an order of protection in place.
