Red Cross desperately needs blood donors

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The American Red Cross puts out an urgent call for blood and platelet donors.

Just this week, 51 Red Cross blood drives in Georgia were canceled because of the winter storm.

Donations were already down in many places because of unusually cold weather

The Red Cross is asking for regular and new donors to give. Albany Donor Center Supervisor Lena Thomas said, "Blood needs to be available at all times, so we ask people to constantly give every chance they can, every 56 days to come out and give. That blood has to be there when our patient needs it."

If you're at least 17 years old and 110 pounds and in good health, you're probably eligible to donate.

You can give at the Albany donor center on Dawson Road.
