Honoring Heroes through Hunting

EDISON, GA (WALB) -

Some special heroes are being treated to a weekend of quail hunting in south Georgia.

The annual Purple Heart Outdoor Trail quail hunt started this afternoon at Southern Wilderness Plantation in Edison.

It's one of four hunts around the nation for combat-wounded and valor-decorated veterans from all branches of the military. Organizers say it's great therapy for all involved.

"I intermingle the units. You have guys that maybe are from the Marine Corps that have never been around a member of the Army. I put them together and they walk away great friends. That only builds great cohesion within the armed forces which is part of our mission." said Dan Hammack with Purple Heart Outdoor Trails.

Hammack says the group has a deer hunt scheduled in Northern California, pheasant hunt in Iowa and a big game hunt in Wyoming later this year.

He also says the group will start their own Facebook page later this year where they hope to connect with more Wounded Warriors.
