Albany inmates earn GEDs

Six more inmates at the Dougherty County jail celebrated earning their GED certificates Friday.        Four of them are still behind bars, and the other two have been released.

Families and friends applauded the inmates who completed their studies while serving time.      Sheriff Kevin Sproul says many inmates re-offend when they're released because they can't find jobs.

He thinks helping them get an education will help.  "What can we do while they are here with us?  We have their captive attention at that time. So we can make a difference, and I think we should at least give it that effort.  And it's at no cost to the tax payer."

Sheriff Sproul says 19 inmates have earned their GED certificates since he started his education program in 2012.
