The newly renovated teen center at Moody Air Force Base will host the "Preparing Teens for the Real World" youth summit on Saturday, February 1 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
This event will involve youth from several local youth groups including Valdosta Early College Academy, Union Cathedral, Crossing Jordan, Serenity Christian, and youth from the Moody AFB community.
February is National Teen Dating Violence Prevention Month and this event represents a local collaborative effort among the Office of Adolescent Health, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., and Moody AFB youth program to provide education and opportunities for dialogue aimed at preventing teen violence in the Valdosta region.
"this is the ideal time, location and collaboration between the Moody and Valdosta communities to address a very serious issue that impacts our teens on a daily basis," said South Health District Adolescent Health coordinator Percy Chastang.
Chastang will also serve as keynote speaker at the event for the youth session. An educational session will be provided for parents and adults as well designed to provide strategies for increasing communication skills with teens.
According to the latest research, nearly 1.5 million high schools teens experience physical abuse from a partner on a yearly basis. Youth that experience violence in dating relationships develop an increased risk for substance abuse, eating disorders, risky sexual behavior and future domestic violence.
