VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Information from Wiregrass Georgia Technical College

Wiregrass Georgia Technical College (WGTC) Foundation South awards scholarships to students throughout the year to support the college's mission of building an educated workforce and promoting economic development in South Georgia.

Scholarships are provided by very generous individuals, organizations, and businesses in our local area. Each year, over 100 students are awarded scholarships provided through donations to the Foundation's General Fund.  Most tuition and book assistance awarded to students is provided from the General Fund.  Other scholarships are named by their donors, including those provided here.

During spring semester, Amanda Luke (Lanier County) received the Ben Copeland Scholarship, Kortney McQueen (Lowndes County) was selected for the Carolyn Zeigler Memorial Scholarship and Jennifer Walker (Lowndes County) received the Carolyn King Panizzi Scholarship.

During fall term, the following students earned scholarships: Roger Barber (Douglas; Valdosta Campus), David Apperson Memorial Scholarship; Summer Bennett (Lanier), Ben Copeland Scholarship; Allison Cooper (Lowndes), CJB Industries Scholarship;  John Daniels (Lowndes), Non-traditional Program Tool and Textbook Assistance Scholarship; Alisha Duncan (Cook), Adel-Cook County Chamber of Commerce Scholarship; Alice Gunter (Lowndes), Kevin DeMarcus Acree Memorial Scholarship; and Carrie Troupe (Cook), Kiwanis Club of Adel Scholarship.   During summer semester, these students were awarded scholarships:  Theotis Johnson, Jr. (Lowndes) and Amber Pike (Brooks), Brogdon Emergency Medical Services Exam Scholarships; Brianna Johnson (Lowndes), Non-traditional Program Tool and Textbook Assistance Scholarship; Carol Padgett (Lowndes) and Ashley Shuman (Lowndes), Quattlebaum Radiology Scholarships; and Alisha Worthy (Lowndes), Mary Catherine Coffey Memorial Scholarship.

Dr. Penelope Schmidt, Executive Director for WGTC Foundation South, stated, "We are so thankful for the support from our area's businesses and community members. Their donations to both the General Fund and to specific scholarships provide the extra assistance students need as they prepare for careers in the local area. In addition to supporting students, these donors help position our area for economic growth by building a stronger workforce."

WGTC Foundation South will kick off its annual campaign on February 1, 2014 and encourages the community to support workforce development at WGTC through tax-deductible donations to the Foundation.  For questions or to discuss ways that you can create growth by partnering with WGTC Foundation South, contact Dr. Penelope Schmidt at 229-293-6190 or penelope.schmidt@wiregrass.edu.
