Cordele and Crisp County leaders are also urging people to stay off the roads as another cold snap threatens to bring sleet and ice.  Tuesday, all emergency responders and elected officials in the county and city planned for ways to meet an anticipated spike in calls.

Emergency staff says icing will likely occur in the early morning hours, making roads especially dangerous.  The room full of planners closely watched National Weather Service reports Tuesday morning.

"Well it looks like we're gonna have basically a quarter inch of ice, freezing rain scenario, finishing out with maybe 1-2 inches of snow overnight," said Chief Dep. Billy Hancock, Crisp County Sheriff's Office.

And that could spell disaster out on the roads.

"Ice is something that nobody really knows how to handle or drive on in this area.  We don't have a lot of chains to put on vehicles," Hancock said.

He said the county and the city don't have many 4 wheel vehicles, which can compromise public safety.  "We will stage deputies at different fire stations throughout the county so they can be close to situations that may arise."

Bridges can become especially dangerous in freezing conditions.

"This afternoon whenever the rain starts and we see the temperature drop below or at freezing, it's time for everybody to go home and just stay off the roads," Hancock said.

Winter conditions threaten more than the roads.

"Based on the forecast we've seen, I've seen anywhere from a tenth of an inch of ice to about three tenths.  If it gets to that upper limit, then there are gonna be some outages," said Steve Rentfrow, Crisp County Power Commission General Manager.

He said power crews have been gearing up for a busy night and are on standby.  "We will get everyone restored as quickly as we can, but if you're on some type of health issue, you know, we may not be able to get to you as quickly as that requires."  (Steve Rentfrow, Crisp County Power Commission General Manager).

If you find yourself in that position, he said, immediately call 911.

The Crisp County Power Commission suggests residents keep a flash light, blankets and other supplies in case power does go out.
