Cook hires Irwin Co.'s Lindsey as head football coach

After three seasons in Ocilla, Jon Lindsey has been hired to lead the Cook Hornets football team.

The hire will be made official by the Cook County school board Monday night.

He tells WALB he's excited about taking over a program with a tradition of winning.

"I like the school system," he says. "They've got some great facilities over there."

The Hornets will move up in classification in 2014, from AA to AAA.

"It's just another challenge," Lindsey says.

Lindsey went 20-13-1 in his three seasons with the Indians, including a trip to the Class A Public state semifinals in 2013.

He spoke with the Indians team Monday morning to inform them of his decision.

"It was good," Lindsey says. "There was some hurt out of them. There was some hurt out of me. But they handled it like good young men."

"I love these kids," he added. "They're going to be just fine."
