Southern Heritage Hunt kicks off

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Hundreds of coon dogs will hunt across South Georgia this weekend.  The American Kennel Club is hosted it's 2nd Southern Heritage Hunt at the Exchange Club Fairgrounds.

250 hunters are expected compete against each other to see who has the best dog.  Proceeds from the event benefit the prevention of child abuse.  Registration is closed Friday at 5pm for Friday's hunt, but several hunters are getting ready to chase and trap some coons.

"The weather is a little cool, but really cold weather is good.  It's not raining, so that's a great thing.  It's just cold, but coon hunters like it.  The dogs perform real well in the cold," said Jimmy Phillips, AKC Field Rep.

Phillips said they raised $9,200 last year, but they hope to exceed that.  He said more venders are selling food and hunting supplies this year.

There will be a dog show Saturday morning featuring the seven breeds of hounds participating in the hunt at 11am, as well as another hunt in the evening.  The deadline to register is 5pm Saturday.

The final four dogs will compete against each other early Sunday morning.

All of the events are open to the public.
