ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer in the U.S. Phoebe Putney wants to reduce the number of deaths in South Georgia through free cancer screenings. Doctors gathered Thursday night at Darton College where Phoebe leaders unveiled a new pilot program.  Participants will be screened by low-dose spiral CT to determine if they need any follow up care.

In order to participate, you must be between the ages of 55 and 74.  You must be a current smoker or have quit within the past fifteen months.  And you must have smoked at least one pack of cigarettes a day for 30 or more years.

"If cancer is found at stage 3 or 4 you maybe have about 6 months to a year to live, if we catch it at stage 1 or 2 you will live 10 years or more," said Cathy D, amico, Lung navigator.

The lung watch program is funded by donations to the Phoebe foundation, the Southwest Georgia Area Health education center and the cancer coalition of South Georgia They only have space for about 200 people.  If you're interested in participating, talk with your physician who can refer you to the program.
