(WMC-TV) - A deadly shooting outside a North Mississippi high school football game sparked an effort for change in five counties.
Roderick Bobo, 15, was reportedly shot and killed by gang members after a football game for North Panola High School last year.
Now parents in DeSoto, Marshall, Panola, Tate and Tunica counties formed a group called Saving our Sons.
"As a result, the youth violence that's happening all around us in northwest Mississippi we decided to come together as men to save our sons," said co-founder Charlie Reese.
The group vows to do more to stop the violence.
"We were appalled like everyone else. I think we have to get black and white involved in this," said Marshall County resident Dale DeBerry.
The group is recruiting fathers, uncles, brothers, and cousins who are productive citizens from the area. Their goal is to teach young boys how to be men who make a difference in their communities.
Panola County Sheriff Dennis Darby says law enforcement cannot win the fight alone.
He says older gang members prey on and use young children to do their dirty work with murders, drugs, robberies, and other crimes because of lesser sentencing.
"We've got to train these young people ... These are going to be our sheriffs, judges, attorneys. These are the people we have got to start working with them right now," said Darby.
Darby says it starts with one thing: love.
The group is made up of men from all work backgrounds from clergy to judges. They say they just want to see these young men live out their full potential.
