Viewpoint: No Pay Raise for School Board

Posted: Updated:

Dougherty County School Board members apparently won't get the big raise they wanted. Last summer, the board voted 4 to 3 to increase their pay from $250 a month to $1000 a month.

But they can't get that raise unless the General Assembly approves it. We talked to all four lawmakers who represent Dougherty County at the State Capitol, and three of them - Sen. Freddie Powell Sims and Representatives Carol Fullerton and Gerald Greene -- told us they won't vote for it.

Only Representative Winfred Dukes said he would consider it.  Without support from a majority of the local delegation, the raise won't be approved, and that's a good thing. Board members are overdue for a raise, but a 300% hike at once is ridiculous, and the timing couldn't be worse.

Many teachers haven't gotten a raise in years, and actually have had their pay cut because of furloughs.  They deserve an increase before the school board.  If board members don't realize that, we're glad our state lawmakers do.
