VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

With frigid temperatures back in South Georgia, service organizations are opening their doors to help keep people warm.

The Red Cross in Valdosta is preparing to help those organizations if needed.

"It depends on the shelter and the location," said Jack Looney, Disaster Program Manager for the South Georgia chapter of the Red Cross in Valdosta.

"A lot of our faith-based organizations open their doors up for warming shelters," Looney continued.

But all this cold weather is challenging the Red Cross.

"As we use the items, we have to replenish the items. So yes, that puts a stress on us," admitted Looney.

Hardware stores in Valdosta are also feeling stressed, thanks to the increased business this cold weather is creating.

"We've sold more heaters than normal because this temperature is much colder than what we normally see this time of year," explained David Turner, Operations Manager at Miller Hardware in downtown Valdosta.

Plumbing supplies have also been in high demand as many people are dealing with frozen pipes.

"Pipe fittings, pipe insulation, things to prepare people for cold weather. Business has been brisk in that area," Turner pointed out.

Despite the challenges this latest arctic blast creates, Jack Looney says the Red Cross is ready.

"We're back up, fully capable, to our level we started the last one with," said Looney.

But all this cold weather isn't making that an easy task.
