Memorial to honor K-9 'Sasha' after death

WARWICK, GA (WALB) -

After months of planning, a fallen K-9 officer will finally get a proper memorial service.

Warwick Police K-9 Sasha was found dead in her handler's patrol unit after becoming trapped in the front part of the car in September 2012.

It's still unclear how the Dutch Shepherd got into that vehicle.  The Warwick police chief doesn't want this memorial service to focus on how Sasha died, but rather how she lived, serving and protecting her community.

"She was a very good K-9 officer, she loved her job. She had a fear of loud noises and thunderstorms but she did a great job, super narcotics dog," said Warwick Police Chief David Morris.

Officer T.J. Frey was fired after the death, but a Worth County Grand Jury decided not to indict him on a charge of misdemeanor cruelty to animals. Sasha's remains were taken to the University of Georgia for an autopsy which found no mistreatment. Sasha's death ignited a 'Justice for Sasha' rally and shed a negative light on the Warwick Police Department when Morris entered in as Chief.

"It really caused me a lot of internal grief because I know I couldn't have done anything," said Morris. "There's no way I could've known but I wish something could've happened different that she didn't have to die that way."

Sasha's memorial will be held in the city square right across the street from the new Warwick Police Department Saturday February 1st at 1 p.m.

Chief Morris is estimating that more than 100 people will be in attendance.

A headstone of Sasha already sits in the city square. An organization that takes care of fallen K-9 officers will bring Sasha's remains to the memorial.
