Snow in northeast strands airline passengers in Atlanta

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Heavy snow in the northeastern United States is prompting airlines to delay or cancel thousands of flights nationwide, causing airline passengers to find themselves stranded in airports like Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International.

According to FlightAware.com, more than 3,000 flights were canceled Tuesday nationwide, and about 1,500 flights were canceled Wednesday.

Sue Spring is trying to get from Florida to Ohio. Her plane was an hour late because of a delay getting out of New York Tuesday, so she missed her connecting flight in Atlanta. She spent the night in the atrium of Atlanta's airport.

"It's hard to sleep in these chairs and get comfortable," Spring said. "The first thing I'm going to do when I get home is get in bed."

Jeff Heidlebaugh and his wife Marie are trying to get to Pennsylvania after visiting their son in Germany.

Their connecting flight was canceled, so they, too, spent the night in the airport.

"It's a little noisy," she said as an airport worker came with a floor-buffing machine.

"We just feel sleepy, tired," said Jeff Heidlebaugh. "We just want to get to our destination, just want to get the trip ended. It's been a good trip up until now."
