500 to attend MLK Dinner at Civic Center

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of people gathered at the Albany Civic Center to celebrate the legacy Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior.

WALB is also broadcasting the event live from the Albany Civic Center at 7:00 on its ABC channel. Organizers said they're expecting about 500 to attend.

The King Day Celebration committee set up tables and gearing up all day for tonight's speaker. Xernona Clayton, a civil rights leader who worked with Dr. King, discussed the reverend's dream for equality.

She's expected to speak on ways to improve race relations.  "Her theme is keeping the dream alive.  So I think she's gonna tell us what we need to do to continue the dream of Dr. King.  And I think we're gonna be in for a real treat," said Bill Robinson, King Day Celebration Committee Co-Chair.

Robinson says proceeds from the event will go to the Civil Rights Institute to honor Dr. King's legacy. They're expecting to raise between $30,000 to $40,000. The money will be used for operations and to support future exhibits.

The dinner sold out in advance. But those without tickets are welcome to sit in the bleachers to listen to the speaker free.

Tune in to WALB-ABC at 7:00 for live coverage of the event.
