VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

A VSU fraternity sponsored a blood drive in Valdosta on Monday to celebrate MLK Day.

The Sigma Iota chapter of the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity held the blood drive at the local Red Cross on Bemiss road.

The fraternity's president says they wanted to serve the community because serving the community is a big part of what Dr. King stood for.

"We wanted to commemorate Martin Luther King Day for a day of service," explained Marcus Hill, Alpha Phi Omega President.

"It's all about serving the community...what [Martin Luther King, Jr.] did for us, the odds that he went against, it took a lot of courage to go through that and make sure we're all equal," Hill added.

The blood drive runs until 7 p.m.
