Police arrest one, search for more in check fraud case

Police have made an arrest and are looking for more suspects they say tried to cash bogus checks.

Brian Wesley McKever, 28, is charged with forgery in the 3rd degree.

McKever was arrested for attempting to cash a fraudulent check using the ID of Steven Thomas on December 19th. Investigators believe McKever is one of four suspects using fake ID's in attempting to cash fake checks.

Police say three other men tried to cash bogus checks at three different Regions Bank locations.

Officials report 44 year old Keith Newsome, tried to cash checks at the Regions Bank on Sylvester Road, 39 year old Steven Thomas tried to cash a check at the Regions Bank on West Broad Avenue, and 23 year old Garrick Phillips made the same attempt at the Regions Bank on South Slappey Boulevard.

All three left their driver's licenses and the fake checks behind when tellers refused to cash the checks.

Anyone with information is urged to call Police at229-431-3288 or they can call CrimeSTOPPERS at 229-436-TIPS.
