Witnesses: Adult cheers on 7 students fighting one Valley High School student
VALLEY, AL (WTVM) -
Police say a 15-year-old Valley High School student was assaulted by seven other students while an adult encouraged the violence near Trammell Ave., about one block from Valley High School.
The incident happened at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14. The victim reportedly said something to another student that angered the seven students who then jumped the boy.
The group reportedly knocked the victim to the ground, then kicked and stomped him. He was transported to the Lanier Emergency Room, bloodied and bruise with a broken leg. He has since been treated and released.
An adult female was present during the incident. Major Mike Reynolds with the Valley Police Department says, "[She] did not step in to keep this kid from getting hurt. From witness statements, she actually was encouraging and cheering on the fight."
One student filmed the fight with a phone, and police have been able to review the footage. The video was posted to a social media website, and has since been removed.
In police opinion, the fight was not gang-related.
Juvenile assault charges are expected for the seven teenagers who jumped the victim. Their case will be prosecuted in Chambers County Juvenile Court.
The adult is expected to be charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
