ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A man caught illegally dumping garbage in Albany is paying the price. As part of his sentence, Michael Sanders is cleaning up this site near Lockett Station Road and Brooke Hollow parkway where he and others dumped.

Keep Albany Dougherty Beautiful Executive Director Judy Bowles says it is senseless. She says dumpsites are a poor reflection on the entire community, and people who are caught will be punished.

Bowles says, "When we catch illegal dumping the judge can give you a fine of $1,000. He can have you pick up a one mile radius which will be other people's debris as well as yours and then if you are a repeat offender he can give you jail time."

County residents who don't have garbage service can take 250 pounds to the landfill for free every day and put 3 cubic yards of debris on the curb for pick up every 2 weeks.

Bowles suggests calling 311 if you see someone dumping illegally.
